Applications

The magnetostrictie strains fo traditional materials are quite low (λ//=10~100 x 10-6). Several RE giant magnetostrictive alloys (GMM) were developed in 1960’s~1980’s, one of which is (TbDy)Fe2 twinned single crystal with <112> preferred orientation. Its strains is more than 1000 x 10-6 at 0.5kOe. Compared with piezoceramics, (TbDy)Fe2 is 4 times greater and its power density is 20 times higher.

Magnetic acoustic transducers: Underwater sonar is most important application for GMM. GMM can also be applied to land sonar, sonic transducers and ultrasonic transducers, speakers.

Actuators: applications in this aspect include linear motors, inchworm motors, robots, fuel injection pumps, active inhibiting vibration system and ink jet print heads.

Controllers: e.g. the fluid, can be controlled directly; Servo valves can be controlled indirectly by controlling the fluid; Other practical applications including precision machining, switches and phase modulators etc.

Sensors: e.g. micro-displacement sensors, accelerations sensors, audiphones and noise or vibration sensors etc.

Electronics elements: e.g. sound surface waves element, delay lines, filters and etc.

*λ// is the axial strain, under 39.8-79.6kA/m magnetic field at 5-10Mpa pre-stress, when the rod axis parallel to the field.
